Baku-APA. Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called on the United Nations on Wednesday to speed up its reform to improve its credibility and role in coordinating all nations, while adapting itself to the current global reality, APA reports.

Ilves made the remarks as he delivered a speech during the general debate of the 66th session of UN General Assembly, which opened here Wednesday.

"If not given a fair and equitable voice, proportional and appropriate to a nation’s role in today’s world, not the world of 1945, we will find that the organization has less and less credibility," the president said.

The UN reform is a very important and sensitive issue. Most UN members agree that there is a need to reform the United Nations, but disagree on how to proceed with the reform.

The UN needs to change as the world around us changes, and reforms should be carried out in both the General Assembly and the Security Council, Ilves said.

"System-wide coherence, delivering as one, revitalization of the General Assembly are steps in the right direction," Ilves said, adding "Estonia hopes the same spirit will prevail in the reform of the Security Council."

The Estonian president proposed that the international community should "adopt a new attitude of openness to new developments in order to make sure that the UN as a whole can better deliver on the undoubtedly important issues for which it is responsible."
