Baku – APA. Migrants are rounded up on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa for mass transfer on ferries to Sicily and mainland Italy, APA reports quoting “The Telegraph”.
The tiny island off Sicily has been overwhelmed by a relentless stream of boats full of illegal arrivals from North African shores.
Many are Tunisians who fled unrest in their homeland in the hope of finding family members or jobs in France. Italy shipped more than 2,000 migrants to detention camps on its mainland.
Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International has said that migrants were left to fend for themselves in appalling conditions.
A thousand angry Tunisians staged a march through the middle of Lampedusa’s sole town, protesting at the length of time they have been kept on the island.
