Baku – APA. The European Union’s enlargement commissioner, Stefan Fuele, said a political stalemate in Albania is hurting the country’s chances of joining the European bloc, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.

In Tirana Wednesday, Fuele said the commission will not be able to make a positive assessment for Albania in the next progress report if a political solution is not reached.

He spoke after meetings with Albania’s president, prime minister and the head of the opposition Socialist Party.

Albania’s opposition has refused to recognize the results of the 2009 parliamentary elections, and has called on the government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha to resign.

Three people were killed in anti-government protests in January, when police fired on demonstrators in the streets of Tirana.

Prime Minister Berisha accused the opposition of trying to stage what he described as a “Tunisia-style” coup.
