Baku – APA. Austrian police have arrested a former Bosnian army general on a warrant from Serbia, which wants him to face charges of war crimes related to the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
Austria’s Interior Ministry confirmed Jovan Divjak was arrested Thursday night in Vienna after flying in from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Serbia is seeking his extradition. The retired general is a born-Serb who defected to Bosnia’s Muslim-dominated army at the start of the conflict between the two sides. Officials say he is wanted in connection with an attack in Sarajevo on a Yugoslav army convoy.
Since his retirement from military service, Divjak has helped many war orphans get scholarships through a non-governmental organization he runs. Hundreds of Bosnians gathered in Sarajevo Friday to protest against his arrest, including some claiming to be beneficiaries of his charity.
