Baku-APA. The director of the London School of Economics, Howard Davies, resigned over financial ties with the family of embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

In 2009, Davies approved the decision to accept a 300,000-pound (about $500,000) research grant from a fund run by Gaddafi’s eldest son, Saif al Islam. He also visited Libya to advise the government about financial reforms.

"I have concluded that it would be right for me to step down," Davies said. "The short point is that I am responsible for the school’s reputation, and that has suffered."

Gaddafi and his family came under increased international pressure for a violent crackdown on protestors, who demanded the longtime leader to step down. The protests, which began on February 15, claimed thousands of lives and left scores injured.
