Baku-APA. United Nations radio has been ordered off the air in Ivory Coast by a regulatory board loyal to incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo, APA reports quoting The Washington Post.
In a decree dated Wednesday, the national council on audiovisual communication revoked the U.N. radio’s permit to broadcast, saying the decision would take effect immediately.
However, U.N. radio director Sylvain Semilinko said Thursday that work continued as normal at U.N. radio headquarters as preparations were being made in case their signal was jammed.
Gbagbo, who refuses to give up power, has twice ordered the U.N. peacekeeping mission out of the country after accusing it of arming and transporting rebel soldiers loyal to his opponent, Alassane Ouattara. The international community and the U.N. say Ouattara won the West African country’s November presidential election.
