Dutch Recall Ambassador From Iran Over Execution

Baku – APA. The Netherlands is recalling its ambassador from Tehran following Iran’s recent execution of a Dutch-Iranian woman, Zahra Bahrami, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
Dutch officials accuse Iran of showing a lack of respect for Bahrami’s family by burying her remains 400 kilometers from Tehran, without allowing any family members to be present.
Foreign Ministry officials in The Hague said they also called in Iran’s ambassador for discussions Monday.
Iran said it hanged Bahrami on January 29. She was charged with smuggling cocaine into the country, but originally had been arrested at an anti-government protest after Iran’s disputed presidential election in 2009.
The Netherlands froze all diplomatic relations with Iran following the execution, saying that Iran’s treatment of the Iranian-born Dutch citizen was “barbarous.” Media reports say Bahrami’s family believes the drug charges were concocted after the woman was arrested for taking part in a political protest.
