"We must act swiftly and turn our clean energy targets into real projects," European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra stated during the Ministerial Dialogue: Scaling up Investment for Tripling Renewables and Doubling Energy Efficiency, APA-Economics reports.
“Last year in Dubai, we took a step toward ending the fossil fuel era. We committed to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. For me, this commitment has always been more than just a target, it is, honestly, the best investment we can make. Renewable energy is a local resource, creates jobs, strengthens our independence, and is now cheaper than polluting alternatives. Achieving these goals could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10 billion tons by the end of this decade—more than the EU’s total emissions over three years. So, it’s an ambitious vision, but I believe it can be done,” Hoekstra noted.
He reminded that, thanks to rapid growth in renewable energy, the EU reduced emissions by 8 percent last year: “Today, more than half of Europe’s electricity comes from wind and solar energy, surpassing all fossil fuel sources. However, when looking at a global scale, emissions still rose by 1.3 percent last year.”
