"Bulgaria is quitting the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline project," Borisov said after a meeting with EU ambassadors in Sofia.

Bulgaria will not take part in the project because Burgas region residents never supported it and also because its route lies through protected nature areas, Bulgarian news agency BGNES quoted Borisov as saying, with reference to the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The project’s efficiency is also up in the air, Borisov said.

Russia, Greece and Bulgaria signed a contract in 2007 on joint construction of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline to bypass tankers using the busy sea lanes of the Black Sea.
