OMV Gas & Power: Iran is a promising source for Nabucco

Baku. Vugar Mustafayev - APA-ECONOMICS. Iranian gas is viewed as a promising source of resources to fill the Nabucco gas pipeline, said Michael Dieter Ulbrich, Head of International Pipeline Projects, OMV Gas & Power.

Nabucco is planned to be a 3,300-kilometre (2,050-mile) pipeline running from the Caspian Sea via Turkey and the Balkan states to Austria.

In his words, the EU and U.S. have concerns about the current situation in Iran.

"However, this country is a good source for Nabucco,â€ he added.

He also emphasized that Azerbaijan, as a crucial supplier of gas, is of great importance for the Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH.

"But we need other sources, including gas from Iraq. Nabucco is also open to cooperation with Russia and Turkmenistan,â€ he noted.

According to him, the schedule for bringing the pipeline into operation is not changed and the construction work is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Azerbaijan is seen as a crucial potential provider for the Nabucco pipeline, construction of which is scheduled to begin in 2009, with the completion date set for 2014.
The pipeline will transport 31 billion cubic metres of gas to the energy-hungry EU from the Middle East and Asia so as to reduce the blocâ€™s reliance on Russian supplies.
