Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-ECONOMICS. Azerbaijan will be able to export 800-1000 MW of electricity next year, said Etibar Pirverdiyev, President of the state-owned utility AzerEnerji.

According to him, the country’s total power generation capacity is 6 000 MW at present.

“The domestic demand for electricity in the autumn-winter is expected to reach 4 000 MW. The commissioning of new power plants opens up new opportunities for Azerbaijan to export electricity. Currently transmission lines between Azerbaijan and neighbouring countries are being reconstructed,” he added.

Despite the global financial crisis, a number of projects were successfully completed in the energy sector, he added.

A 525 MW power plant will come on line in November, he said.

According to him, negotiations with Iran to build a hydroelectric power plant on the Araz River in Ordubad region of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic are nearing completion.
