Miklos Haraszti wants violence against journalists to be rooted out

Mr. Haraszti touched upon the state of freedom of media in Azerbaijan and stressed that violence against journalists should be rooted out. He stated that sometimes violence against journalists remains unpunished. He noted that 5 journalists were released from jail according to pardon decree of President in December, 2007. Azerbaijan should pass this stage. Mr. Haraszti stated that he debated state of media in Azerbaijan with Terry Davis, Council of Europe Secretary General, Thomas Hammarberg, and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Pier Sjogren, Ambassador of AGO Group, and noted that they will appeal officially Baku recently to prevent criminalization of journalism./APA/
