Congressman Joe Wilson: Azerbaijani people enraged by Russian army’s savagery on January 20 could declare their independence a year later

Azerbaijani embassy in the US told APA’s US bureau that according to the congressman from South Carolina, being the member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs he wanted to speak about the savageries committed in Baku on the night of January 19-20. The congressman said that 26,000-Soviet army was deployed in Baku to suppress national movement of Azerbaijanis and the army fired on innocent people.
Over 130 people were murdered, 611 were injured, 841 were detained. There is no report about the fate of 4 people who missed. Though Mikhail Gorbachov announced emergency state in Baku, brought army to the city and tried to defend Soviet government, this gave contrary effect. Azerbaijani people enraged by Russian army’s savagery on January 20 could declare their independence a year later. US opened its embassy in Azerbaijan in March, 1992,” he said.
Congressman noted that it is already 16 years that Azerbaijani nation could protect its independence state despite of political and economic difficulties dating back to Soviet period. He said that struggle of Azerbaijani nation for its independence and freedom was met with sympathy.
