Amendments to the law on freedom of assembly in Azerbaijan were also debated at the meeting.
“I met with the representatives of the Venice Commission, who are directly engaged in this issue. We discussed the law on regulating the freedom of assembly in Azerbaijan. Venice Commission has just received Azerbaijan’s proposals and therefore they have not acquainted themselves with the document yet. I think that Venice Commission’s assessing proposals of Azerbaijani government can be delayed until February next year,” he said.
Andres Herkel said the amendments to the law should be made early in 2008.
“Otherwise, it will be late. It is impossible to be optimistic about pre-election situation, if the legislation is not amended,” the co-rapporteur said. /APA/
