“Ukraine demands contacts with the Russian Federation, I am ready for these contacts, but I do not see the point of them, an agreement will not be possible,” said Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Eastern Economic Forum held in Vladivostok, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
According to him, if any foreign troops appear in Ukraine, they will be a legitimate target for the Russian Armed Forces, and if long-term peace agreements are reached, there will be no need for them (foreign troops-ed.).
So far, no one has seriously discussed security guarantees with Russia. They should exist for both the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
Russia will fully comply with the peace agreements related to Ukraine once they are reached. If someone from the Ukrainian side truly wants to meet, we are ready, and the best place for that is the heroic city of Moscow," Putin emphasized.
Putin noted that Kyiv had recently ruled out the possibility of contacts with Russia, but is now requesting such engagement.
According to him, Ukraine’s participation in NATO directly concerns Russia’s security interests:
“Under Ukraine’s constitution, agreements on territories must be confirmed by a referendum, but this requires the lifting of martial law. Russia has never opposed Ukraine’s initiatives for integration with Europe.
Yanukovych did not reject Ukraine’s accession to the EU but sought to achieve it on acceptable terms. When he realized the economic consequences of joining the EU, he wept,” Putin said.
He described Ukraine’s aspiration to join the EU as a legitimate choice.
