Frankfurt's main DAX index edging up 0.30 per cent to 9,507.02 points.
London's benchmark FTSE 100 gained 0.06 per cent, ending on 6,829.17 points, while in Paris the CAC 40 lost 0.03 per cent to 4,378.33 points.
Gold futures for December delivery soared $1.60 to settle at $1,266.60 an ounce on the Comex.
