Baku-APA. Fijian diplomat Peter Thomson was elected on Monday as president of the 71th session of the United Nations General Assembly, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Thomson, who has served as Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations since 2010, won 94 votes from the 193-member assembly, beating his competitor Andreas Mavroyiannis, who received 90 votes.
Thomson will replace Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark as president of the assembly in September this year.
