Putin, Erdoğan discuss Iran-Israel conflict-UPDATED1

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation focused on the sharply escalating situation in the Middle East, APA’s Moscow bureau reports citing the Kremlin press service.

Putin and Erdoğan condemned Israel’s military operation against Iran as contrary to the UN Charter and other norms of international law. Both leaders expressed concern over the intensifying Iran-Israel conflict, which has already caused numerous casualties and poses serious long-term consequences for the entire region. They called for an immediate halt to military actions and emphasized that disputed issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, must be resolved exclusively through political and diplomatic means. It was agreed that the relevant authorities of both countries will continue close cooperation on this matter.

Regarding Ukraine, Putin thanked Türkiye for its organizational support in the Russia-Ukraine negotiations. He noted that Russia is strictly adhering to agreements reached after the second round, including the handover of deceased soldiers’ bodies and the exchange of prisoners of war.

Putin and Erdoğan also discussed current bilateral issues, including the energy sector. They stated that this topic will be reviewed during Russia-Türkiye contacts at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation meeting scheduled for the end of June.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran with Russian President Vladimir Putin, APA reports citing the The Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications.

During the conversation, the leaders addressed the armed conflict between Israel and Iran, bilateral relations, and other regional issues.

Erdoğan stressed that the tensions sparked by Israel’s attack on Iran jeopardize the overall security of the region. He described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unlawful stance as a clear threat to the international system.

He also emphasized that the region is not prepared for a new war.

The Turkish leader noted that since the outbreak of the conflict, Türkiye has been actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to halt the attacks. He stated that a solution can only be achieved through diplomacy and called on all parties to return to the negotiation table without delay.

Erdoğan added that Israel aims to distract attention from the genocide occurring in Gaza.

Putin expressed agreement with Erdoğan on the urgent need to cease hostilities immediately and to prioritize diplomacy.
