A committee to govern the Palestinian Gaza Strip will likely be formed soon, said Abdel Fattah Daula, a spokesman for Fatah, one of the two largest Palestinian factions, in a comment to the newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, APA reports.
"There are discussions about an imminent announcement regarding the formation of a technocratic committee as part of the agreements on the next stage of a settlement in the Gaza Strip, and we hope that it will be in line with the Palestinian vision, which was agreed upon with Arab and Islamic countries and received international recognition," he said. He added that an exact date was impossible to provide, but "the announcement will likely take place soon." The Fatah representative explained that the timing depends on whether the factions adhere to the agreements reached, provide guarantees, and agree on powers and mechanisms for interaction with the Palestinian government, as well as the US position on the matter.
A Fatah spokesman emphasized that the movement insists on appointing a Palestinian minister to head the committee. His authority must come from the government, he added, in order to "avoid separating the Gaza Strip from the West Bank," as they are "a single geographic and political entity."
