Iran says 5+1 actions will determine future decisions

Baku-APA. The secretary of Iranâ€™s Supreme National Security Council says the 5+1 group must revise its approach toward Iran if it wants a â€œcontinuation of talksâ€, APA reports quoting Tehran Times.

Any development in dealings between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) in the future â€œwill be determined by the other sideâ€™s behavior,â€ SNSC Secretary Saeed Jalili told reporters in Tehran on Saturday.

Jalili, who is Iranâ€™s chief nuclear negotiator, said more than a year has passed since Iran and the 5+1 group met in Geneva, and during this time the West has been putting pressure on Tehran to abandon its nuclear program, but he noted that the inefficiency of this strategy has become â€œmore evident than before.â€

â€œFifteen months have passed since the last talks. During this period, the negotiating party, by adopting a wrong strategy called pressure

[strategy], has taken a path whose its futile and costly nature is now more evident than before,â€ Jalili explained.

He said Iranâ€™s â€œlegitimateâ€ right to nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes and its ability to offset sanctions has become â€œclearer than ever.â€

â€œThe legitimacy of the Islamic Republic of Iranâ€™s logic and rights and its undeniable capacities have become clearer than ever.â€

He added, â€œTheir pressure strategy has not only been inefficient, costly, and useless, it has also led to a big scandal -- a scandal serving terrorism.â€

Jalili was referring to the terrorist attacks on two nuclear scientists in Tehran on Monday morning in which one was martyred and another injured.

Tehran has complained, asking why the names of its nuclear experts have been revealed by the IAEA and the UN Security Council.

â€œInspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency have announced the names of (Iranian) scientists and the UN Security Council has listed them in its resolutions. The scientists have been assassinated in an attempt to implement the resolutions -- a big scandal for the Security Council and the international body must be held accountable before the international community.

â€œTerror is a sign of the failure of the pressure strategy. The assassination of Dr. Majid Shahriari on the one hand cancels out the pressure strategy and on the other strongly supports the legitimate right of the Iranian people and the values of the Islamic Revolution.â€

Jalili said Tehran welcomes the 5+1 groupâ€™s decision to return to the negotiating table after it realized that the sanctions strategy toward Tehran is â€œdoomed to failure.â€

â€œWe, however, welcome talks now that the negotiating party

[the 5+1 group] has realized its strategy is doomed to failure, but it is not enough for moving on this path. They

[the 5+1 group] have to put aside their previous wrong strategy and double standards if they seek the continuation of talks.â€

Jalili also reminded the West that as it has been proven in the previous rounds of talks in Geneva, Iran will not negotiate on its inalienable right to nuclear technology meant for civilian uses.

â€œAs we did not negotiate our peopleâ€™s rights during the first and second rounds of talks in Geneva, we once again underline that the Iranian nationâ€™s rights must be upheld and are not negotiable.â€

He went on to say that Iran is now more prepared than ever to enter talks with the major powers with a reliance on logic.

In its package of proposals presented to the West last July, Iran put forward some suggestions ranging from the dismantlement of all weapons of mass destruction and the peaceful use of nuclear technology to economic cooperation.

â€œWe have questions and suggestions which were clearly mentioned in our letter dated July 6,â€ he stated.

â€œAny future decision will be determined by the other sideâ€™s behavior,â€ he added.
