Baku-APA. Ed Husic, the first Muslim to be elected to the Australian Parliament, has been sworn into office on a Qur’an belonging to his parents, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Husic, whose parents are Bosnian immigrants, was sworn into the 43rd parliament in Canberra on Tuesday, September, 28, 2010.

Husic, who is a member of the Labor Party, said it was an enormous privilege to serve in the 150-seat parliament.

"Given my background, there are some people taking a small slice of pride or happiness," he told The Australian newspaper.

In one of the most closely contested general elections in years, neither the Labor party nor the opposition coalition managed to win the 76 seats needed for a majority.
