Baku-APA. A French corporal who died after an artillery attack in Afghanistan was the 44th soldier from France killed in the war-torn country since 2001,the Elysee Palace confirmed Saturday, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.
The French corporal died at a hospital after he and an Afghan interpreter were wounded by artillery fire from insurgents, the presidential office said.
The corporal was the 44th French soldier killed in Afghanistan since France deployed troops there at the end of 2001, the statement said.
President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed condolences for the victim and support for Afghan authority, saying France would continue to work with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in the country.
France has about 3,500 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, mostly to the east and northeast of Kabul.
