El Universal, a major Venezuelan daily, reported that the prison, where the clash took place, is currently guarded by the Bolivarian National Guard and the police. Access to the prison is closed and visits suspended.
Gunshots began at noon Monday, reoccurred Monday afternoon. And the shootings were also heard early Tuesday morning. The clash was said to have been caused due to a struggle for control of the prison between six criminal leaders and their followers, with handguns and rifles being used alongside bulletproof vests. There were several detonations, tear gas and Molotov cocktails were also thrown, said the newspaper.
The bodies of the inmates killed in the fighting were sent to morgues of local hospitals, according to the newspaper.
