President Donald Trump said Thursday he “wasn’t happy” with President Vladimir Putin after Russia launched its deadliest strike on Kyiv in months, elaborating on comments earlier in the day urging Putin to halt his bombardment, APA reports citing CNN.

“I didn’t like last night — I wasn’t happy with it, and we’re in the midst of talking peace, and missiles were fired,” Trump said in the Oval Office in response to a question from CNN about what he meant after posting “Vladimir, STOP!” in a post to Truth Social.

The president declined to say if he is considering additional sanctions on Russia if the attacks don’t stop, telling reporters, “I’d rather answer that question in a week.”

“I want to see if we can have a deal. No reason to answer it now, but I won’t be happy,” he added. “Let me put it that way — things, things will happen.”

Pressed on if Ukraine may have to cede some territory to Russia to secure a ceasefire, Trump stayed vague, saying, “It depends what territory.”

“We’ll do the best we can, but they lost a lot of territory,” the president said, noting Russia seized control of Crimea under former President Barack Obama. “They say, ‘Well, can you get it back?’ I think that’s going to be a very difficult thing to do.”

Such a move would reverse a decade of US policy and could upset the widely held post-World War II consensus that international borders should not be changed by force.

Still, Trump insisted Thursday that the US is “putting a lot of pressure” on Putin to negotiate a deal.

“We’re putting a lot of pressure on Russia, and Russia knows that, and some people that are close to it know or [Putin] wouldn’t be talking right now,” he said.
