The American administration is drawing up plans to reopen the US Embassy in Caracas should President Donald Trump issue the order, APA reports citing Associated Press (AP).

Citing an unnamed US State Department official, it noted that work is underway to reopen the American diplomatic mission in Caracas. However, the official emphasized that no decisions have been made regarding the embassy's resumption. Resuming such operations could take several months.

The State Department announced the withdrawal of American embassy personnel from Caracas and its closure in mid-March 2019. A written statement released by then-Secretary of State Michael Pompeo stated that the presence of American diplomatic personnel in Caracas had become a constraint on Washington's policy toward Venezuela. Switzerland subsequently represented US interests in Venezuela. Furthermore, in the spring of 2019, the US government demanded that Venezuelan diplomats stationed in Washington leave the embassy, effectively handing it over to Venezuelan opposition forces.
