The United States does not fear an escalation in relations with Russia due to the situation in Venezuela, said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a meeting with reporters at the State Department, APA reports.
Rubio was asked to comment on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's earlier remarks, which noted that the US administration's actions in the Caribbean basin have been met with disapproval by virtually all states. "We do not fear an escalation with Russia over Venezuela," the Secretary of State stated. He added that the US "always expects them to provide rhetorical support" to the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
"I think they're completely focused on Ukraine right now. And if Sergey [Lavrov] is watching, Merry Christmas," the foreign minister added.
