US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe made a secret visit to Brussels this week and held meetings with senior European Union (EU) officials, APA reports, citing Politico.
According to the publication, the main purpose of the visit was to reaffirm Washington's commitment to intelligence cooperation and reassure European partners.
According to three sources familiar with the matter, Ratcliffe held talks with the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, as well as senior representatives of the European Union's Intelligence and Situation Center and the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Military Staff.
According to two European officials, the purpose of the meeting was to "calm nerves" and demonstrate the US's intention to continue close intelligence cooperation with the EU. The reason for this is growing concerns in some European capitals about the foreign policy course of President Donald Trump's administration.
The sources note that Ratcliffe's visit was not announced to the public and took place in a limited circle. However, the meeting is seen as an important step towards strengthening trust between the EU and the US and stabilizing mutual information exchange.
