APA reports that according to the initial results, democrats have taken the lead in both houses of the Congress for the first time after 1994. The Democrats have won 227 and Republicans 151 seats in the House of Representatives. The Democrats have won 55 seats in 100-member Senate and are sure this number will reach 60. The Republicans have won 35 seats in the Senate.
The House of Representatives serves a two-year term and the 100 Senators serve staggered six-year terms. Every two years, approximately one-third of the Senate is elected. The new Congress will convene in January, 2009.
