UN, Canadian leaders meet on Libya, Haiti

Baku-APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the current situation in Libya and Haiti, a UN readout said here, APA reports.

Ban and Harper met on the sidelines of the UN high-level meetings on the non-communicable diseases and desertification, which was held on Monday and Tuesday, and the annual General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which is to open here on Wednesday.

"They discussed current developments in Libya and in Haiti," the UN readout said.

Libya is expected to invite attention as world leaders gather here for the week-long annual debate on major world issues. Last week, the UN Security Council approved a UN mission in Libya to help the country in its efforts for the post-war reconstructions.

"Canada’s commitment to these and other multilateral issues was acknowledged," the readout said. "The secretary-general thanked and encouraged the prime minister to maintain this commitment."

"They also exchanged views on UN priorities for the years ahead, " the readout said.

Canada has been an active member of the United Nations ever since the world body was set up in 1945, the North American country has participated almost every major UN peacekeeping operations in the world.
