Official Al-Ahram online quoted Health Ministry officials as confirming the 5 deaths in Marsa Matrouh, which is considered an Islamist stronghold. It meanwhile said that 350 people were injured, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Earlier, the state-run MENA news agency said clashes erupted outside the governorate building in Marsa Matrouh after Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi announced that the chairman of Egypt 's Supreme Constitutional Court will run the country for a transitional period -- a decision in essence ousted Morsi, who has been facing nationwide protests against him due to his "poor performance" after coming to power a year ago.
Meanwhile, MENA said that Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, also witnessed clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi citizens late Wednesday.
Despite the ouster, Morsi said he is still the legitimate president of Egypt. But he was considered to be speaking in a prerecorded statement, which was later broadcast by pan-Arab news channel Al Jazeera.
"There is no alternative for legitimacy, the constitution or the law," repeated Morsi, who, according to local sources, has been removed to an undisclosed location.
