Baku-APA. At least 11 civilians were killed and six others were injured on Wednesday evening as mortar shells hit two houses at North Sinai province in Egypt, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
"The mortar shells launched by extremists targeted the armed forces south of Sheikh Zuweid city but they mistakenly hit the said two houses," the source added, noting that the civilians killed included a 30-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child and the injured also included women and children.
Meanwhile, five militants were killed during clashes with security forces in North Sinai as part of the security raids on militants' hideouts in the peninsula.
Earlier in April, at least 15 military men and four civilians were killed and about 40 others injured in simultaneous armed attacks on checkpoints in Sheikh Zuweid city, while security raids on the same day killed around 55 militants.
Terrorist activities mounted in Egypt since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in July 2013 and the following security crackdown on his loyalists that left about 1,000 killed and thousands more arrested.
On the other hand, hundreds of police and army personnel were killed in anti-government attacks carried out by extremist, self-proclaimed Islamists.
Most of the attacks took place in the restive peninsula but they extended to reach the capital Cairo and other provinces across the country.
Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM), which has recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) regional militant group, claimed responsibility for most of the anti-government attacks in Egypt.
