Baku-APA. At least 85 people were killed in a February attack in South Sudan's Jonglei state, the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said on Friday, releasing the findings of an investigation of the deadly attack, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"The report states that at least 85 people were killed, including 69 who were identified by name. The majority of those slain were women and children," said deputy spokesperson Eduardo del Buey to reporters at a daily briefing here.

On Feb. 8, an unknown group attacked a village in South Sudan's Jonglei state on border with Sudan, said media reports. According to State Governor Kuol Manyang, the attack took place when the whole village was en route to a place to spend the dry season along the Sobat River.

The attack resulted in the highest single loss of lives since an increase in inter-communal violence began several months ago in the country.

Del Buey also said that it was difficult to get access to some parts of the area, and up to 34 additional people are reported missing.

The spokesperson said that the report made note of the fact that the South Sudanese government responded quickly to the incident so that the overall number of casualties was reduced.

"More should be done, however, to protect communities at risk of attack," said del Buey.

"It is crucial that an investigation takes place with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice and seeking redress through compensation," he added.
