More than 100 people died in Mali due to an extreme heat wave that hit the country last month, APA reports citing foreign media.

According to hospital sources quoted by the online information site “Joliba”, the hospital “Gabriel Toure” in the capital Bamako welcomed 102 heat-stricken patients who died upon arrival, most of whom were over 60 and chronically ill. However, some local sources estimate the death toll in three days at over 250.

According to Malian meteorologists, on Thursday last week, the city Southwestern di Kayes recorded a temperature of around 48,5°C, the hottest day in African history recorded in April. Authorities urged residents to stay in well-ventilated areas and to limit school hours for students, reminding them that the young and elderly are the most vulnerable, state broadcaster “Ortm” reported. Authorities have consequently shortened school hours for primary school students to protect them from the deadly temperatures. The high temperatures were attributed to the meteorological phenomenon El Nino, which raised ocean and atmospheric temperatures.
