Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Sunday that the army chief of staff Seare Mekonnen had been shot, however, his condition remains unknown after sparked unrest in the country, APA reports citing AFP.
"There was an organized coup attempt in Bahir Dar but it failed", Negussu Tilahun, spokesman for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, told state TV on Saturday.
Abiy Ahmed took to national television on Sunday to address the situation in the country.
The United States embassy in the African country issued earlier an alert about reported gunfire in the capital Addis Ababa, and violence around Amhara's main city Bahir Dar.
