Egypt prosecutor general says to stick to his office

Baku-APA. Egyptian Prosecutor General Abdel- Maguid Mahmoud said Friday he will stick to his office to defend the judiciary immunity ensured by the constitutional declaration and the judiciary laws, APA reports.

In a press conference held Friday night, Mahmoud, who was sacked by a presidential decree on Thursday, said his decision to stay in office came as a way to prevent the executive authority from intervening the judiciary affairs.

He reiterated that he never submitted his resignation, asserting that he is staying in his position in accordance with the laws of the judiciary authority which stipulated that "no one could sack the prosecutor general or remove him from his office unless he asks or reach the age of retirement."

He noted that threats from the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood would never impair persons who abide by legitimacy and the sovereignty of law.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud asserted that any offending statements against him are mixing the roles of the prosecution general and the investigation judges in the "camel battle."

In a telephone conversation with Justice Minister Ahmed Miky Thursday, Mahmoud said he rejected to leave his office, in accordance to the judicial immunity which all judges enjoy.

Morsi ousted Mahmoud Thursday in a presidential decree. The decision came one day after the Criminal Court decided to acquit all defendants accused of attacking peaceful protesters at Cairo’s Tahrir Square in what is known as "camel battle" during the anti- government protests last year.
