One Soldier Killed, 3 Policemen Wounded in Dagestan

Baku-APA. One soldier was killed and three policemen wounded after unknown assailants opened fire on a military checkpoint in Russiaâ€™s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a local police spokesman said on Thursday, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

â€œThe attack took place at 9:00 p.m. Moscow time on Wednesday near the village of Mokok,â€ the spokesman said.

He added that investigators are working at the scene of the assault to establish all details of the incident.

The troubled region sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there.

At least 12 militant groups with an estimated strength of about 300 people are believed to be operating in Dagestan.
