Baku-APA. Libya’s forthcoming constituent assembly elections, originally set to be held later this month, are likely to be postponed to July 10, a member of the country’s electoral committee told Xinhua on Saturday, APA reports.

The official, on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua that the elections for constituent assembly might not be held on June 19 as planned, but be postponed to July 10.

Libya’s media committee, however, said that they haven’t received any notification of possible delay, and are still registering foreign reporters who are coming to cover the elections as scheduled.

The electoral committee is expected to hold a news conference on Sunday to clarify whether there will be a delay.

On May 1, a spokesperson of the electoral committee said the constituent assembly elections would be held between June 19 and June 23. However, with the frequent outbreak of tribal clashes, the recent taken-over of Tripoli’s international airport by an armed group, and the increasing disagreements between the National Transitional Council and the interim government, there are concerns that the elections might not be able to be held in this month.

Several sources from the Libyan government have recently indicated a possible delay of the elections, but the government later denied the claims.
