The Bar Association was partly responsible for the delay in admission of lawyers, the newly-elected chairman of the Bar Association, Anar Baghirov, told APA.

He was commenting on the abolition of the institution of representation in Azerbaijan and the delay in admitting documents for conducting advocacy activities.

The process of admitting lawyers was delayed due to the resignation of the Bar Association’s leadership and the preparatory work conducted for the organization’s conference, Bagirov explained. “We will resume the process of admitting documents for advocacy in a few days,” he added.

According to the latest amendment to the legislation, the institution of representation was abolished in Azerbaijan. From January 1, 2018 on, representatives will not be able to take part in civil and administrative court cases.

President Ilham Aliyev earlier underlined the need to increase the number of lawyers to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights in courts, giving the Bar Association the relevant instructions.
