On certain days of the year, Earth moves along its orbit and passes through particularly dense streams of comets or asteroids, leading to annual meteor showers. These meteor showers repeat every year. This year, the ε-Perseid meteor shower will be active from September 5 to 21, peaking on September 9, the Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University (BSU) informed APA.
The Department states that from Baku, the meteor shower will be visible each night around 19:30 on the eastern horizon and will remain active until 05:45 the following morning. The shower will be most intense at around 05:00 when it reaches its highest point above the horizon. At the peak of the shower, up to 10 meteors per hour are expected to be observed.
It was noted that meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris streams left by comets and asteroids. When these debris fragments collide with Earth's atmosphere, they begin to burn at an altitude of approximately 70-100 km, appearing as "falling" stars.
