“Armenia is a member of the Organization for Transparency in the Mining Industry and must continuously submit information on mining industry activities to the public,” said Sabit Bagirov, co-founder of the "Environmental protection first" coalition at a briefing for journalists held today, APA reports.
He said that mining operations all over the world are accompanied by a very significant negative impact on the environment, and Armenia is no exception in this respect. Thus, the protests of environmental organizations and the population living in the area regarding the activities of mining enterprises in Armenia are becoming widespread from time to time: “Armenia remains as a state that has not joined the UN Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). The transparency of mining companies operating in Armenia is at a low level. At the same time, the territories where Armenian mining companies are located are close to the border with Garabagh. Already former IDPs are returning to their native places, and the Armenian side must fulfill its responsibilities in order for the population to live in a healthy environment."
