488 551 disabled people registered in Azerbaijan

Baku. Ramil Mammadli â€“ APA. 488 551 disabled people have been registered in Azerbaijan. About 60 000 of them are children, chairman of Azerbaijani Union of Organizations for Disabled People Davud Rahimli said, APA reports. He said in most countries the number of the disabled people is 10-15 percent in comparison to the population, in Azerbaijan this figure is not more than 5 percent.

â€œThis is good,â€ he said.

Chairman of the union said the government agencies are taking measures for protection of the rights of the disabled people and their rehabilitation.
â€œOf course, the government is taking measures for the rehabilitation of the disabled people. There are centers, boarding schools. But rehabilitation envisages only medical treatment. This is not right. Rehabilitation is a broad notion, it should envisage a number of issues. It is praiseworthy that the parliament is going to make changes in the legislation,â€ he said.

Rahimli said the union gave instructions to the State Architecture Committee and Ombudsman to take into consideration the disabled people in the city-building and construction work.
