Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva – APA. The Azerbaijan Academy of Social Relations has today hosted a round table entitled “Implementation of social rights of the citizens suffered from the accident in Chernobyl nuclear power plant” organized by the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation (ATUC), APA reports. ATUC deputy chairman Javanshir Alkhasov said that this year is the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident: “Chernobyl accident was equivalent to 20 “Hiroshima bombs”. Millions of people suffered from this accident, hundreds of thousands became homeless and it caused serious damages on environment. Russian well known radiologists confessed that they have not expected such grave results of the disaster. The oncological diseases (tumor) appear even 10-20 years after the radiation. UN declared the 26Tth April as an International Day of Commemoration to pay tribute to the disaster victims.

Alkhasov said that more than 7 000 Azerbaijani citizens participated in the elimination of the results of Chernobyl accident. A part of them participated in the building of Slavutich city. 5200 of them became disabled later: “There is no healthy “chernobylist” in our republic now, some of them didn’t undergo medical examination fully and others were not treated completely”.
