Addressing the meeting on the theme “Japanese earthquakes. Azerbaijan’s geodynamic problems” at the Institute of Geology, Gurban Yetirmishli said three undersea seismometers will be installed in the Caspian Sea by the end of this year.
He said the seismic stations in the Caspian Sea will be installed in Umid and Guneshli fields of Azerbaijan and BP’s Shahdeniz field. The first seismometer will be installed in 300-350 m depth of the platform in the Umid field. Gurban Yetirmishli said this will be the first undersea seismometer in the former USSR countries.

Director said that 10 undersea stations will be installed in the Caspian Sea. Noting that there are 30 seismic stations in Azerbaijan, Gurban Yetirmishli said five more stations will be installed onshore by the end of the year. So, Azerbaijan’s seismic monitoring system will be established, 35 onshore, 20 undersea. Yetirmishli added that undersea passive seismic monitoring activities will help increase productivity of hydrocarbon resources in the Caspian Sea.
