Analogical tendency is observed in number of Azerbaijani asylum seekers. Compared to 2000, number of such our compatriots decreased by 20% in 2009-2010. Within last 2 years, Azerbaijani citizens asked for asylum in 44 western countries. Number of such appeals was 2495 in 2009 and 1987 in the previous year.

Azerbaijanis prefer to seek asylum in EU countries. 2338 in 2009 and 1841 our compatriots in 2010 asked for asylum in the EU countries.

In general, last year, 358 000 appeals had been received in the whole world for taking refuge in different countries. And this is less by 5% compared to 2009 and twice in comparison to 2001’s indicator. Number of persons asking for asylum in Italy, Greece and Malta decreased by 33%, instead, number of people asking for asylum in Germany, Sweden and Denmark significantly increased.

Serbia takes first place for the number of its citizens who ask asylum from foreign countries. Generally, 8% of asylum-seekers belongs to Serbian citizens, 7% - Afghanistan, 6% - Iraq, 6% - China, 5% - Russia, 4% - Iran. The most attractive countries for asylum-seekers are the US, France, Germany, Sweden and Canada.
