Baku-APA. The future of Congolese children remains vague due to endless violence and bloodshed, APA reports quoting presstv.ir website.

Armed men have killed five civilians in an attack on a shopping center in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the country’s military says.

The shopping center, located in Congo’s North Kivu Province, was attacked by Mai-Mai gunmen late Friday, Colonel Bobo Kakudji, commander of the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) in Nord-Kivu said Saturday.

"Their intention was to loot. There were five civilians killed and 11 wounded including a FARDC captain," Kakudji was quoted by AFP as saying.

Mai-Mai militia, in the eastern parts of the country, was formed to resist Hutu forces that fled into DR Congo after the Rwandan genocide.

Eastern Congo has experienced interminable cycles of violence since the beginning of civil strife in 1998.

The conflict has dragged on for over a decade and has so far left over 5.4 million people dead.
