Baku – APA-Economics. A town in the Mediterranean province of Antalya has banned the use of plastic bags, a major source of environmental pollution, Daily News reported.

The Muratpasha Municipal Council ruled Wednesday that only bags made from fabric, paper or similar recyclable, reusable or organic materials will be able to be used in the town.

Enacting the ruling will be a tough process, Muratpasha Mayor Suleyman Evcilmen told the Dogan news agency. The process will move smoothly if we can get the public’s participation in the project, Evcilmen said, adding that some sponsors will be supporting the effort.

Using alternatives to petroleum-based plastic bags will also help reduce the amount of money spent importing petroleum, the mayor added. Council members were given environmentally friendly bags to use in order to set an example.

We will succeed if you use the bags you’ve been given and promote using them, Evcilmen told the council members. This is a revolutionary decision and will help save our environment and natural resources.
