Maternal and infant death rates reduce in Azerbaijan

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. The budget of health system has increased by 8 times in Azerbaijan within recent five years. AZN 59 million was allocated for health needs in the country in 2003, AZN 502 million was allocated in 2009. Compared with 2008, the budget of health system increased by 50 percent in 2009, Health Minister Ogtay Shiraliyev said at the press conference, APA reports. According to him, structural reforms started in the health system last year. Over 60 medical establishments were constructed, overhauled and reconstructed last year.

Ogtay Shiraliyev said that four out of seven perinatal centers envisaged in the “State Program for the protection of health of mothers and children” had been opened. Health Ministry carried out a number of activities within the framework of “Child Year” 2009. over 300,000 children were examined in the territory populated by refugees and IDPs.

The minister said maternal and infant death rates were reducing in Azerbaijan year-after-year. In 2000 infant death rate was 16.7 per thousand, in 2009 it reduced by 11.4. Maternal death rate reduced from 37.6 to 24.3.
