Results of monitoring in Kura and Araz rivers announced

National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources conducted monitoring for the first ten-day of February to study the level of pollution of the Kura and Araz Rivers and their branches, the ministry’s press service told APA.

Compared with the third ten-day of January, the flow rate in the Kura River in the first ten-day of February reduced by 16 cbm/sec and made up 207 cbm/sec.
The monitoring revealed that biogenic substances exceed the maximum permissible concentration in the Kura River as a result of pollution of the water with industrial and domestic wastes in Georgia and Armenia. Phenol pollution and copper compounds exceeds 2 times in the Shikhli-2 area, phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times and copper compounds by 3 times in the Aghstafachay River, phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 2 and 3 times respectively in the Aghstafachay Reservoir.

According to the monitoring, the flow rate in the Araz River, which borders on Armenia, made up 86.4 cbm/sec. Phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and 2 times respectively in Horadiz area of the River, copper compounds and phenols exceeded MPC by 3 times in Shahseven I, copper compounds exceeded MPC by 2 and phenols by 3 times in Bahramtapa.

Oxygen concentrations in equilibrium with the air range from about 6.65 mg/liter to 7/78 mg/liter.
