Today marks 90th anniversary of Israfil Mammadov, first Azerbaijani Hero of Soviet Union

Gandja. Jamshid Bakhtiyar – APA. Today marks the 90th anniversary of Israfil Mammadov, who was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his bravery near Novgorod in December, 1941. Director of Israfil Mammadov’s house museum in Gandja Eldaniz Babayev told APA’s west bureau that the hero’s jubilee would be marked in his native Gandja and Novgorod (Russia), the province, which he defended from fascist attacks during the World War II.

Israfil Mammadov was born in Gapanli village of Shamkir on May 30, 1919, and began to live in Gandja when he was a child. He finished Gandja secondary school #1. He was demobilized after being wounded for the third time in 1942. Israfil Mammadov lived in the house in Gandja given by the state and married to Yevdokia, nurse from Novgorod, who saved his life when he was wounded. They had twins Galina and Svetlana. They now live in Novgorod. Israfil Mammadov died on May 1, 1946. Israfil Mammadov is the first Azerbaijani, who was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
