World Telecommunication and Information Society Day to be marked in Azerbaijan

Baku. Nijat Mustafayev - APA-Economics. On May 17, Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and IT will hold solemn ceremony devoted to World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

Ministry told that on March 26, 2006, UN General Assembly passed a resolution declaring May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Date of holiday is connected with establishment of International Telegraph Union (former name - International Telecommunication Union) on May 17, 1865.

Main purpose of this holiday is to help increase of information level on opportunities given by internet and information and communication technologies to societies and countries.

“This year, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated under the slogan “Better life in villages with ICT”, passed by UTI in 2009 and which is considered as continuation of development of last year’s topic “Better cities and better life with ICT”. This year’s topic serves the purpose of use of ICT opportunities for improvement of rural population’s future. Information and communication technologies present wider opportunities for formation of incomes, as well as for struggle against poverty, starvation, pure health and ignorance in villages”, told the ministry.
